Never underestimate what a short sword can do in skilled hands. A Roman Legionary could put the Gladius to devastating use, showing that a short blade with a fine point can do terrible things to your foes. A Gladius also allows one to thrust from behind a shield with minimal movement ensuring that they do not danger themselves in the process. The Sica existed alongside the Gladius although it never quite fell into Legionary hands. Instead, this brutal blade was favored fair for gladiators, and they proved that the subtle curve of this blade made it instantly lethal. Thrusts alone were deadly, and the curve ensured that a quick pull turned a thrust into a potentially decapitating motion. The Roman Empire will only give you one sword so which one would you wield?
